The brake pad market splits into two broad camps: standard semi-metallic pads engineered for OEM-equivalent stopping distance and price, and performance pads — usually ceramic or low-steel blends — engineered for higher thermal capacity and quieter operation under repeated hard stops.
For line-haul fleets running mostly highway miles with light brake duty, standard semi-metallic pads are the right call. They're cheap, they bed in fast, and they wear predictably with the rotor. The total cost of ownership over a 100,000-mile cycle is hard to beat.
Performance pads earn their premium in vocational and mountain-duty applications. A refuse truck doing 800 brake applications a day, or a line-haul truck running the Eisenhower grade, will glaze a standard pad and lose stopping distance. A ceramic pad holds friction coefficient up to 800°F and resists fade far longer.
The tradeoff is rotor wear. Performance pads are harder on rotors — expect to replace rotors one full cycle earlier than you would with semi-metallic pads. Run the math on your fleet's rotor replacement cost before committing; for some operators the pad savings don't offset the rotor cost.
A middle path many fleets land on is a low-steel pad — a hybrid blend that runs cooler than semi-metallic and gentler on rotors than full ceramic. It's not the best at either extreme, but it's the most forgiving across mixed duty cycles.
